For folks who like "loyal" devices (as @ethanz puts it), e.g. FLOSS, non-spying, etc., any favorite tablets or e-readers?

@rose_alibi Yeah... I have long loved my Samsung tablet with LineageOS, but it is starting to fall apart and reject repairs.

I've been learning how to work with my new PineNote from @PINE64@fosstodon.org . It took a bit of doing, but I've got @zotero@fosstodon.org running; they don't provide an aarch64 build but there is one in the wild for Arch Linux that can be adjusted. @obsidian@mas.to works, @logseq@clj.social doesn't (no aarch64 build). Blessings upon @Vivaldi@vivaldi.net who *do* provide an aarch64 deb file. I will be looking for a good high-contrast greyscale style that suits an epaper display. Normal things like emacs just work and the screen/stylus/backlight are lovely. The team working on the PineNote have crafted a really good interface - it's not something to give to a non-tecchie, but it's a fine tool. Now to sort out a keyboard, and then iBus and support for Devanagari, Newa Lipi, Bangla and all that.

Anyone use their reMarkable tablet in fun ways? I'd love to hear. Here's how I use mine: https://tomcritchlow.com/2024/02/09/remarkable-notes/

@ntnsndr @ethanz I really hope you get a good answer here. I've looked for something along these lines probably every six months for the past number of years, and it seems confusing and complicated so I end up just using my phone with all of its compromises or a laptop.

@coatilex thanks for this. Why is it so hard to have a book without a store in it? My favorite ereader was the Sony reader before they added a store to it. Such a great device.

@ntnsndr @ethanz It's not a perfect match to your requirements but for ebooks I use Calibre on my laptop (available for Linux) and connect that via USB to feed epubs to my PocketBook eInk reader.
The reader theoretically comes with its own shop but I have never used it and there are no ads. The only reason I sometimes turn on the wifi is to access books from my local library. But you can run this device without ever connecting to the internet without problems.
