    boosts appreciated!!! :boostRequest:

can somebody with more wikipedia editor clout than me please try to create a page for fedipact?

i think this would help inform people about our cause lol

there are more than enough news articles about fedipact that could be cited

    https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2023/07/fear-loathing-and-excitement-as-threads-adopts-open-standard-used-by-mastodon/

    https://www.pcgamer.com/threads-threatens-to-muscle-in-on-mastodons-fediverse-and-admins-are-up-in-arms-about-it/

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-66155433.amp

and it's already mentioned on the threads page so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch either!

        Threads (social network)
Threads is a social media, microblogging service operated by Meta Platforms. Threads requires an Instagram account to use the service and features integration between the two platforms. Upon its launch, Threads became the fastest-growing consumer software application in history, gaining over 100 million users in its first five days and surpassing the record previously set by ChatGPT. After Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, Meta employees explored the concept of introducing text-based functionality to Instagram. This feature, known as Instagram Notes, was rolled out in December 2022. The company subsequently began developing a separate app focused on text-based posts. Development on Threads—internally known as "Project 92"—commenced in January 2023, with the platform officially launching on July 5, 2023. Threads immediately became available in 100 countries, but until December 14, 2023 had delayed its launch in the European Union as it waited for regulatory clarity from the European Commission regarding the service's data collection policies. here's a summary

the arstechnica article is a reprint of a wired article i got interviewed for

the pcgamer article was similar and ended with a quote i got from one of my favorite folk punk artists

the bbc article mentions fedipact in passing

the techcrunch article is more recent and mentions it

the sagepub link is an academic paper somebody wrote about it

wedistribute is another one i was interviewed a bit for

and the privacy nexus one goes into a lotta detail about it

as far as like the core concept broadly is it's explained on https://fedipact.online/ and https://fedipact.online/why but tl;dr it's an initiative thingy for instances to sign to commit to blocking threads.net for various reasons related to meta's horrible business practices

lmk if there's any other info i can provide!

Comment: Needs more reliable sources that talk about Fedipact itself in significant detail. SK2242 (talk) 07:57, 14 January 2025 (UTC) Fedipact is a signature pledge by administrators of online Fediverse instances to defederate from the Meta Threads platform.. Signatories believe that Meta will employ an "embrace, extend, and extinguish" strategy, becoming an existential threat to the Fediverse itself. Many also harbor negative opinions about Meta (the company behind Threads) itself. These administrators have pledged to unconditionally defederate with, or block, Threads. This would make it impossible for their users to see content that is hosted on Threads, or for Threads users to follow their users or see their content. As of January 2025, there are over 800 signatures to the pact. External Links 🖤 ANTI-META FEDI PACT 🖤 References

@vantablack It was rejected with the following reason:

"Needs more reliable sources that talk about Fedipact itself in **significant detail**."

      With "significant detail" in bold.
