Challenge to folks on instances that won't (yet) defederate Threads: search out hate speech on Threads, copy the URL into search so it gets federated to your instance, and then report it. Let the mods deal with tens of thousands of hate-speech posts so it's clear what they're up against.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 09-Jan-2025 18:49:19 JST Rich Felker In a sense this sounds like putting gratuitous work burden on your own mod team for something folks will never see anyway - no one is going to boost it onto your instance or follow those accounts anyway, right?
Unfortunately, what happens is that someone you (or someone else on the instance) follow on a low-moderation instance will reply to the hate-speech posts denouncing or debating with them. Then the hate speech gets federated to your instance and shown as soon as you click the response trying to see what it was about.
Preemptively removing these posts is really the only way to avoid that.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 09-Jan-2025 19:01:53 JST Rich Felker @a1ba Some context: Gargron claims they only ever got 68 abuse reports on federated Threads users' posts, and this is part of their excuse not to act (defed).
Giving them a lot more evidence might help push things over the edge.
I don't advise folks actually targeted by hate speech to do this; it's an activity of allyship that folks not personally affected can do.

:umu: :umu: (a1ba@suya.place)'s status on Thursday, 09-Jan-2025 19:01:55 JST :umu: :umu: @dalias sounds like too much work: specifically reading threads just to find toxic posts, I mean, that doesn't sound healthy for the one doing it.
As for blocking them, it doesn't make sense to federate with those who barely have any presense on fediverse, yet still create useless traffic anyway. If your admin doesn't understand this, it might make sense to find another instance, or make your own. -

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 09-Jan-2025 19:09:55 JST Rich Felker @SoniEx2 As I explained in the followup you don't seem to have read, pulling in abusive posts to preemptively have them moderated so they don't later get pulled in via replies (and as a bonus, to demonstrate that the federated instance should not be federated) seems to be a legitimate moderation action, not abuse.

if you see lots of uncorrelated "reply" causes, that's one thing, but if you see lots of correlated "search" (or "explicit request") causes, that has a completely different interpretation.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 09-Jan-2025 19:17:57 JST Rich Felker @SoniEx2 Maybe. It depends on your mods' disposition. I wasn't thinking about it from a standpoint of global/federated feed (a feature I never use and find harmful in lots of ways - this is yet another one - and often forget exists). But demonstrating that pasting a link you got, which you might not know the contents of, into the search box, causes the instance to relay hate speech, seems like good motivation to defederate the source of the hate speech.

you still think your mods aren't gonna get annoyed about you reporting those posts, if they could also see *you actively brought the posts into the global feed in the first place*?
