   Which film camera for total beginners? I agree that autofocus film SLRs are a good place to start.

   I don’t like them anymore (just don’t like SLRs in general, including digital), but my first 100 rolls of film were with a Nikon F-601 (N6006 in the US) and the fact that everything worked as it should with just a 50mm f1.8 lens, meant I had a lot of fun and nothing threw me off.

   Afterwards, I developed a taste for rangefinders but this advice is spot on

     I think the Olympus OM-1 or OM-4 are SLRs that would last a very very long time for anyone, beginner or not. If I were to pick up an SLR today, it would be one of those. In terms of size and function.

     It won’t be the cheap as chips stuff of the less loved later model entry level Nikons and Canons tho.

     @skinnylatte your recommendation of K1000 was perfect for me (as someone who had done lots of mirrorless photography but not film). Yeah, I would have struggled if I was new to cameras. Recently found and ordered a Pentax ME super, my main issue with the K1000 is that it is heavy to lug around, especially on hikes,

     @skinnylatte i think that the oldest double wheel digital Nikon you can afford with a normal wide aperture lens is the best choice for a beginner. Sure, this delays learning about how film choices and dev processes affect modern photography today, but just put a full manual camera in their hand and let them shoot 100,000 photos without having to pay for chemicals. that part can can be pushed further down the rabbit hole

     @timdesuyo probably! Depends on how a person learns and what they want to do with it.

     When I started, I was someone very driven by novelty, and the film stuff felt precious and novel and interesting even if I didn’t have the resources to do a lot of it.

     It was a longish process, but I was also a teenager.

     @skinnylatte Just in my teaching experience, money is a huge barrier for people. I have tried to include film dev and shooting in my teaching as an adjunct - I have the gear, I can walk people through it. If that bug bites them, the dive in. But its an expensive bug, and so much of photography is work. It's repetition, discovering new things that are your new idea to discover that someone wrote...

     @timdesuyo yep, I know not everyone will fully dive in, and maybe it’s not for them, it still cool that they learned a bit of it no matter how.

     I do wish I had more access to film photography education where I was, we didn’t have classes and gear and community stuff the way I have access to things here in SF now.

     It feels different now as well, with people who have *only* had digital stuff and maybe know it quite well, who want to learn film
