    @mike @NanoRaptor and the fact that they're up front about the need for drugs for long distance transport

      @BernardSheppard @fnordius @mike @NanoRaptor Stand on Zanzibar is a real trip into what at least one writer thought the future would look like, especially the worries about overpopulation and corporate power.

      @fnordius @mike @NanoRaptor Thanks, Marc, I will have to read up on the background again. I enjoyed reading the novels as a teenager, and re-reading more recently.

      That theme of writers of that period forecasting what we are now living through - based, in many cases, on scientific papers that were published at the time, led to some amazing stories.

      J. G. Ballard's The Drowned World was one of my favourites, published around the same time.

      @BernardSheppard @mike @NanoRaptor Frank Herbert was quite blunt about Dune being a commentary about how we are already all addicted to oil. After reading some of Kurt Vonnegut's essays, I think a lot of writers shared that opinion.

      @troglodyt @BernardSheppard @fnordius @mike @NanoRaptor I'm referring to another person's thoughts on the topic in a science fiction story. Perhaps that word should've been in quotes to make that extra clear.

      @baconandcoconut @BernardSheppard @fnordius @mike @NanoRaptor

      if you're going to use the word overpopulation you should specify who is considered superfluous
