Physical passed. That was it. I’m coming to Australia, once my classes are done and I sell my house.

Oh man, if only a country like that existed.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Monday, 06-Jan-2025 18:27:13 JST Rich Felker @dymaxion @n3tn3rd @hacks4pancakes I've actually been thinking Nepal would be a lovely place for conferences. Visa on arrival for all but 12 countries' passports and stateless travel document holders, and for those 12 arranging visa with good reason for travel probably isn't overly difficult.

I have bad news for you about the availability of conference facilities in hotels (there are some! At least a half dozen credible options as long as you're under 1k people and can book the whole hotel! Let's move RSA there!)

Or places where being queer or such will get you arrested or killed.

I mean, it's also wildly insane from a climate perspective to fly the entire security community to Nepal? We shouldn't be flying nearly as much as it is — doing it much much more is an unserious suggestion.

Rich Felker (dalias@hachyderm.io)'s status on Thursday, 09-Jan-2025 19:36:07 JST Rich Felker @dymaxion @n3tn3rd @hacks4pancakes I don't have any illusions that everything is wonderful there for queer folks, but there are both nominal legal recognition of rights and norms of not meddling in private lives & affairs of visitors. Along with visa situation, IMO, this puts the country at a pretty optimal point for being fair in who can attend an event there.

Yeah, I have bad news for you about the reality of queer rights in Nepal. The rhetoric is good and the tourist experience is ok, and that's about as far as it goes.

Admittedly my knowledge of the country comes mostly from a number of friends from & who've lived there and my own experiences visiting several times.

Idk, I have pretty strong feelings about not inviting queer folks to have a nice time in a country that kills queer folks, even if the folks one invites are gonna be safe themselves. It's pretty colonialist, if you're going there for that reason.
