     @Shanmonster @lilithsaintcrow BUT—you knew there was a "but" coming, right?—you have to disable enhanced visual search on EVERY Apple device linked to your iCloud account separately. I checked and disabling it on my main Mac, or my main iPad and iPhone, didn't disable it on my laptop or my other iPad …

     Every. Single. Device. Rather than a common setting (hint: the Photos library is synced across devices, why aren't the settings?)

     @Shanmonster @lilithsaintcrow On macOS, the setting is buried in the settings within the Photos app. On iOS/iPadOS all app configuration is managed via the Settings application (under "Applications->Photos").
