   Hehe on a SF subreddit someone says hey where can I get steamed fish at a restaurant and some asshole says ‘what? That’s disgusting’, like they don’t live in a city with a huge Chinese population? Then I clicked on their profile and they live in Westwood park, so they’ve definitely never heard of steamed fish before lol

     When I meet people like this, and they insult my food, I like to say things like ‘oh SF sourdough is fucking disgusting!’ Or like ‘the ferry building farmers market is a tourist trap’

     They get REALLY mad! But they think they can say whatever they want about other people’s food

     I don’t actually think those things (although I am really not fond of SF sourdough). But it’s fun to invert food / racial politics sometimes. You can tell people like that have never thought *their* food can be disgusting.

     But they are the greatest perpetuators of the ‘other food is disgusting unless I personally say it isn’t so, and I can be praised for my cultural awareness’ dynamic that plagues so many California ‘foodies’

     @RufusJCooter @petrillic ahaha I am very annoyed at the ‘SF white peoppe food is amazing’ narrative because I also feel cheated. A lot of it is frankly terrible. Yes, especially the most beloved stuff.

     I have a good handle on the immigrant foods here and it is pretty stunning, but sadly not as celebrated as yet another bland-ish ‘new California’ restaurant that’s famous for some reason

     @skinnylatte @petrillic (Seriously, tho', I've heard all my life about how amazing the food is in SF, and when I'm down there for work & my white colleagues choose where we eat, it's always been 'meh', at best)

     (POC colleagues choosing is an entirely different story!)
