my problem is that my taste in laptops is basically this, especially in terms of its keyboard, i hate laptop keyboards with gaps between the keys
i used to really like Dell Latitude but the modern ones just don't do anything for me. "Flat is Justice" just doesn't apply to laptops for me. older thinkpads also are kinda cool but just don't have the specs i need
i am also not looking to have some modern shithole laptop with bootguard and secure boot and tpm and uefi and whatnot shoved into your ass. they can support that or whatever but don't force me to use it
amd processor would be nice, i prefer a cpu that does not literally melt down and stops working. i was recommended to not have a dedicated gpu in it because it kills battery and integrated gpus are good enough these days
the price of laptops kinda frustrates me because I always have in mind what kind of desktop pc i could get for the same price. i mean i can afford it but it just makes me sad. but realistically i just travel too much for a desktop to be useful to me
framework is the thing im looking at but i feel like its a bit upselly at the same time i do want a high spec laptop that can run modern games and ghidra and gentoo and compile things and so on so idk
im also not a hardware expert so framework is just a tiny bit overwhelming i guess
well in theory i could also get one of those arm macbooks and then dual boot MacOS and Asahi Linux on it with the additional benefit of being able to work on MacOS bugs in my company's software. arm processor sounds cool but idk if im ready for it yet
@lizzy > framework is the thing im looking at but i feel like its a bit upselly at the same time i mean, what they do has to have a premium, you pay for the repairability/upgradeability and all the nice things it comes with.
@mischievoustomato@lizzy Framework is interesting and I continue to follow their progress periodically and contemplate them as a "maybe one day" upgrade whenever I am due for a new machine. I'd never buy a MacBook, for what it's worth. I don't need nor want to go into a long, exhaustive essay as to why MacBooks sucks and Apple sucks, etc.---they just suck and I cannot recommend them in any way whatsoever.
I would seriously recommend checking out newer laptops coming out with Lunar Lake CPUs in them from Intel. AfaIk there are a couple from Asus that have been released and Lenovo has a Thinkpad X1 that's coming out with it. They're promising things like 18 hours of battery life.
@adiz@lizzy yeah. LPDDR ram in the cpu package = fuckhueg speed. But I prefer upgradability honestly. Arrow Lake onwards is gonna be normal again, with LPDDR ram being optional.
