A lot of being ‘into tea’ as a Chinese person in the ‘west’ is reading stuff about tea and doing, what?
(My grocery store green tea says it’s a Divine Miracle Green Tea from ancient China)
Wellness culture is so fucked ahahahah

I read a really complicated thing about tea ceremonies and gongfu tea and was like, my grandpa just called it ‘making tea’, but ok
No matter what language you speak, or what beverage you like, anything that claims to be healthy or cures cancer is pretty scary.
Unfortunately there’s a lot of crunchy new age wellness stuff that intersects with ‘eastern culture’ that I find hilarious.
@zdl lol social media about Chinese tea in English is so so so bad.
I’m on xiaohongshu and douyin mostly for tea content. It is.. worlds apart.
@skinnylatte Or if you're in China and surrounded by actual Chinese tea culture, reading what w*elided* folk say about Chinese tea on social media.
Oh also just read a Canadian tea vendor (who sources tea from China) claim that they invented ‘compressed tea’. As in the tea ‘cakes’. Ahahaha
@skinnylatte For starters they don't talk about badly made-up Orientalist-sounding names like "Divine Miracle Green Tea", right? 🤣
@zdl haha yeah it’s just Name of Place Type of Tea Tea Name. Maybe some talk about how they roasted it and brewed it.
@zdl I really wanna get into buying directly from tea farms in Chaozhou. I speak enough to be able to hopefully convince them to give me the really good stuff. I read that a lot of the best stuff is set aside for domestic tea enthusiasts so I have to find my people there.
@skinnylatte Side note: after a recent book purchase (中国茶经, which is distinct from 茶经, I found dozens (not exaggerating!) of new-to-me varieties of tea that I'm starting to excavate. I just picked up a 250g bag of 2003 六堡茶 for a song and a dance by dealing with the farmer directly. This is an exciting new dimension for me!
@nickolasclarke @zdl here’s a cool video about tea farmers
That whole channel is good, then whatever the algorithm takes you from there
