     You just M-x recover-session anyway.
     
     It probably was GtK crashing instead of Emacs I reckon.

     I've had Emacs crash before, rarely, but I would use it quite excessively. Constantly running in daemon mode, with a lot of heavy extensions.
     
     Been a long time, so no idea what the most likely cause was. I tend to use it without an X toolkit. (With X11 support, just without a toolkit.)
