I think everyone who has an opinion, positive or negative, about LLMs, should read how @simon summed up what’s happened in the space this year. He’s the most credible, most independent, most honest, and most technically fluent person watching the space. https://simonwillison.net/2024/Dec/31/llms-in-2024/
@kristinHenry I cannot count the number of times in meetings a lady says something and then someone else, typically a guy due to statistics, will essentially bring up the exact same thing in that meeting or later. A lot of times I don't think it's meant to be malicious, I think sometimes they didn't fully understand the implications at the moment or they are repeating it in a way that makes more sense to them. Simply addressing, "That is what she said earlier." Invites vs excludes the originator (Lady) back into the conversation, sets the expectation that we count her previous words as contribution, and helps set the norm for that we should provide credit when we pick up other's ideas. In good teams this changes the dynamic pretty quickly and helps a sister not have to come off as, "I told you so." Because someone else said, "she told you so."
I think the dynamics get s little different on social media, but the above works in a day to day scope.
I'm going to start following @timnitGebru . She looks awesome. Thanks for adding her (back) into the conversation so others can find her work.
@anildash@simon@timnitGebru This might not actually be the case here, but as a woman who has been in tech, I'm very familiar with the phenomenon of a woman saying something again and again, and none of the men hear her until a man repeats what she has been saying,
@anildash@simon um...how about @timnitGebru? Who is amazing! Very technical and thoughtful, and has been fighting the good fight for quite some time now.
@kristinHenry@anildash@simon@timnitGebru Strike that: The most frustrating thing is the widespread expectation that I should be interested in it, despite it being precisely the sort of tech in which I am not!
@kristinHenry@simon@timnitGebru she’s wonderful! And I’ve been amplifying her work for years. I think she does very different work than Simon does but yes, would happily say she’s absolutely the most credible person in her domain, which I think of as somewhat broader.
