    Deaths per year:

    The US CDC reported 47,882 #COVID19 deaths (which is certainly undercounted) in the last year.

    In the entire 2023-2024 flu season, the CDC reported 28,000 influenza-related deaths.

    Gun violence claimed 46,728 lives in 2023.

    27,300 people died by suicide using a firearm in 2023.

    40,990 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2023.

    How is it that COVID can cause as much death as things we worry about and legislate, yet it attracts no concern or action from most?

      @augieray, correction…

      The US CDC reported 47,882 people died while testing positive for covid19. Covid19 was not the cause of death for most of those.

      Covid does not "cause" as much death as you implied by your error of omission.

      @davidsabine @augieray are people legit still trying to repeat this nonsense?

      If someone would still be alive with whatever was happening if they hadn't caught covid, then covid is a cause of death.

      Be better

      @ATLeagle @augieray, "be better" = said by people who think they're morally superior to feed their self-righteousness.

      "If someone would still be alive with whatever was happening if they hadn't caught covid, then covid is a cause of death."

      It's not that black & white.

      Ex: an old woman has infection after hip-replacement surgery; tests positive for covid; to not exacerbate her infection the doctor does not use anti-viral meds for covid; dies soon after. Did she die of covid or infection?

      @davidsabine @augieray do you hear this often? It sounds like you may. Maybe be better could be the last gasp of people that are sick of hearing MAGA nonsense repeated over and over.

      My favorite thing about fedi is how acceptable it is to block people instead of continuing to argue.
