Reminder that Alfred Nobel made his fortune from the arms trade and the Nobel Peace Prize is simply peacewashing his bloodstained legacy.

Considering the murderous track record of many other alumni of the Nobel Peace Prize, I think there's a 50/50 probability that if Hitler was alive today they'd give one to him, too.

Jimmy Carter: From peanut farmer to one-term president and Nobel winner | Flipboard
BBC News - Jimmy Carter, who has died at the age of 100, swept to power promising never to lie to the American people. In the turbulent aftermath of Watergate, the former peanut farmer from Georgia pardoned Vietnam draft evaders and became the first US leader to take climate change seriously. On the …

@guenterhack Alas, Nobel Prizes can only go to the living. (They also overwhelmingly ignore female members of winning teams. And non-white people, except the peace prize. And anti-capitalist people, specifically the economics prize.)

@cstross Could he get one just because he's dead? "His death was the greatest contribution to world peace since Ugu Khan got skewered during the siege of Pest."

@drdrang I'm not American and I am under no obligation to tug the forelock at your term-limited king-emperors.

@cstross These comments (however true they may be) might have been appropriate next to Kissinger’s obituary, but not Carter’s.

@drdrang Okay, here's my hot take: EVERY US president has blood on their hands, because THE OFFICE was designed from the outset to run an imperial murder machine. (Because that's what the US colonies were, from the outset—the frontier of an expanding empire—and then it inherited the British empire after 1945.)

Carter gets credit for doing good works along the way, but it's like praising Marcus Aurelius for not being Caligula: yes, but they were both Roman emperors and crucified their enemies.

@quinn @cstross To be clear, I didn't mean Mr. Carter but Hitler as mentioned by Mr. Stross in the OP.
