Look, I'm not mad so much as irritated; but my mentions are a horrific place a solid 95% of the time and the only way I can avoid chewing through my own keyboard sometimes is either A) blocking people or B) explaining to them that we're not gonna agree and I'd rather not keep going round the circle with them.

If I think they're dogshit people, I just block. But sometimes I think the person means well and we just don't even remotely agree.

Most of the time, and including in this case, YOUR comment is not really the problem; it's that the other person is going to USE your comment as a pretext to keep going with the damn argument I just spent several posts trying DESPERATELY to get out of without blocking anyone.

My replies are not a public message forum. If you want to talk to randos in my mentions after I've EXPRESSLY indicated I do NOT want to keep talking to that, at least untag me.

I'm not asking for much here.

You know why nobody ever takes my advice to "go post it on your own timeline then?"

Because this is social media, and they see my (wholly artificial btw) follower count and think "if I reply here a LOT of people will see my brilliant arguments" and they know if post it on THEIR timeline, then not a lotta people are gonna see it.

I hate this. It drives me mental. Please do not help this continue to happen.

@Oggie Because a whole bunch of those accounts are dead or more accurately abandoned. There are people who followed me in 2019 and haven't been back to Mastodon since. If I had to guess, about 2,000 of those followers tops are current users who're paying attention.

Out of curiosity, why is your follower count artificial?

I just assumed you had a lot of people who didn't really engage who read stuff, but I hadn't looked till you just mentioned it.

@AnarchoNinaWrites hmm this actually makes a good argument for why you should opt to hide your follower count i had not considered before

Threadjacking. A tradition unlike any other.

One of the advantages of using screenshots and quote toots is that you don't have to Kool-Aid Man yourself into a convo to make your point. As long as you don't abuse them for gang-ups, they can be valuable.
