   @tek Having gotten ceaselessly annoyed with Notes as a journal (and my hacky Shortcuts to make it more tolerable), I'm looking at Drafts. Which, unlike many other options includes sync via icloud by default and even has a default installed action for appending to a file in icloud drive (that is, aside from copying off of icloud drive, my "can I back this up under my control" requirement is easily met).

     @r343l I adore Drafts. It’s a brilliant program that I've happily subscribed to for years because of the value I get from it. An awful lot of the text I sent to my blog, or here, or via Messages, or to my task manager (OmniFocus) starts in Drafts. I use the side button on my phone to open its quick note capture window, then tap an action to do whatever I want with it.

     @r343l What I truly appreciate is the enormous number of pre-made integrations in its gallery. And failing that, I can write a full-blown program running in Drafts to fold, spindle, and mutilate my text at will. I wish it weren't JavaScript, but hey, I’ll put up with JS in exchange for all the flexibility Drafts brings.

     @tek Sadly very fluent with javascript so it's fine. I imagine they picked it because so many folks know it well enough and likely easiest to embed in the app.

     @r343l For sure. It’s a totally reasonable choice for lots of technical and social reasons. It wouldn’t be my first pick, but it’s not called “Drafts: For Tek”. I can live with it.

     @tek I am basically hacking together (duplicating & modifying existing actions) a workflow for me for a journal with it all archived off into monthly files and it is ... so much easier already? Also Apple should throw out Shortcuts and just hire these folks to making a working "visual programming tool". It has sooo many features.

     @r343l I do love Shortcuts so, but it does get frustrating when I want to do a thing that would be trivial in code that turns into a giant fiasco.

     @tek Shortcuts syntax and UI I usually find baffling and it often takes me so long to figure out how to do even simple things. But always glad to find programming tools for everyone built into computers these days since the trend is very much away from letting people do that.

     @r343l Pretty much the same for me all around. And annoying edge cases aside, it’s lovely to script simple things together quickly.
