    Downsides of #aphantasia: I am face blind, I don’t remember anything visually

    Upside of aphantasia: I have no visual recall on anything, including bad things that might have happened to me. Once it’s happened, I never ‘see’ it anymore.

    Zero. Can’t even picture my loved ones’ faces.

      @skinnylatte I wonder if that's part of why you're such a great photographer. You understand how fleeting moments are, better than those of us who can recall different senses.

      @Legit_Spaghetti I wonder that sometimes! I ‘see’ things ‘now’ and my other senses are very tuned up to compensate for the lack of visuals. When I write or take a photograph, I have a holistic sense of all of the feelings I am trying to convey

      @skinnylatte I don't know if I have face blindness, but I don't remember faces. It's always stressful picking my mother up from the airport, because I'm always afraid I won't be able to pick her out from the other old ladies.

      😬

      @501 partly it’s also context cues are missing in situations like airports. You’re used to your mother being the main old lady around you and suddenly there are 10 more. I have this difficulty as well

      @skinnylatte Does this apply to cats? If you had two cats with the same coat colour, would you be able to distinguish between them?

      @eviltofu I look more at the coat color rather than the face, just like I would look at someone’s clothes or hair, and also their body language rather than visual facial features

      @PeterSommerlad not visually. I dream in feelings. I describe it like how it feels reading a book (which I also can’t visualize, but can follow verbally) over watching a movie.

      @skinnylatte can you describe a persons features? I have it as well. I can’t even tell you my wife’s eye color without guessing.

      Do you have issues recognizing people when you do see them? I’m good at instantly remembering a person if I see them again, ofc I’m really bad with names.

      @skinnylatte I think face blindness is a a different thing. (I am aphantasic but not face blind. No difficulty with faces in front of me but can’t visualise them otherwise except in the metaphorical way we thought everyone did) I don’t suppose there’s any reason why someone can’t have both, but they are different.

      @burnskp I can’t describe anyone’s features. I also have difficulty recognizing people.
