The Internxt VPN extension, VPNCity, Uvoice, and also ParrotTalks, a language learning app have also been hacked and need to be updated to remove spyware. The same researcher found attacks under way against several other browser extensions.

This is the reasoning behind Google's Manifest V3 system for browser extensions, locking them down so that they can't steal all your personal data even if someone does manage to push out a trojan horse.
The problem is that Manifest V3 also breaks long-standing plugin features, particularly ad blockers, because Google makes its money from ads.-

@Aether All of those expansions appear to have been proprietary malware from the very start, thus some more malware being added is really the typical result.
Hacking is playful cleverness and the developer account getting "compromised" and spyware being added (that definitely wasn't the malware author adding more spyware themselves), is not something that is playfully clever.
Manifest V3 doesn't stop spying - it's soley intended to prevent the effectiveness of proprietary malware advertising JavaScript refusers like ublock origin.
If google wanted to eliminate spyware, they would disallow proprietary extensions, but alas their browser itself is spyware.
