lol I’m at my local SF cafe and a bunch of Singaporean tourists just came in and dropped $80 on toast

On principle I refuse to spend $12 on a slice of toast (at this place, even tho I come here for coffee) but I guess my compatriots are loaded

How do I know they’re Singaporean? I can hear them from a mile away. It’s not Singlish as such but there is a very specific way of speaking English that is unmistakably Singaporean. Sometimes that can be an urban Malaysian accent too but if they use certain words, they’re clearly Malaysian

      Example:

‘Don’t like that leh’ - 99% of the time, Singaporean Chinese

‘Don’t like that, wor’ - usually Malaysian Chinese

Difference comes down to the choice of Chinese dialects and use of more Malay
      ‘

Most of the time, I associate Malaysian Chinese English with having more Cantonese loan words whereas we have more Hokkien. We also have different Malay loan words that are clear giveaways.

If someone says ‘wah they very atas’ where atas means ‘rich’ or ‘high class’, that’s usually a Singaporean

If someone says ‘wah syiok’ emphasis on the ‘sy’ instead of ‘schhhhiok’, that tells me they’re Malaysian

@skinnylatte interesting! Thanks for the explainer. I once played so much DOTA I picked up adding "la" at the end of sentences from all the SG players. Pure natural speech mimicry

@skinnylatte maybe they aren't fully aware of the price/exchange rate?
