Our Dutch public broadcaster @nieuws.nos.nl takes it lightly: the news is #11 on its homepage, way behind 3 deaths in a traffic accident, and framed as an opinion. "Finland says Russia damaged power cable in the Baltic Sea. It thinks the oil tanker is part of a shadow fleet circumventing sanctions."
Estonian Interior Minister: Damage to critical infrastructure has become so common that it's difficult to believe the cable damage between Estonia and Finland was an accident or coincidence. They have become systematic, and we must consider them an attack on our infrastructure. https://yle.fi/a/74-20133526
This from Kaja Kallas, VP of the European Commission/Foreign Affairs & Security, from Estonia herself: The incident involving undersea cables in the Baltic Sea is the latest in a series of suspected attacks on critical infrastructure. We commend the Finnish authorities for their swift action in boarding the suspected vessel.
The main suspect now seems to be an oil tanker of the Russian dark fleet, Eagle S, which made strange movements above the cable at the time it failed. Finnish authorities will give a press briefing at 1 p.m. CET: https://yle.fi/a/74-20133485
In Estonia, Elisa and CITIC Telecom have now also announced that three telecommunications cables between Estonia and Finland are out of use. https://yle.fi/a/74-20133524
Today's print editions of Dutch newspapers @nrc and @Trouw only have small articles on this probable attack on the infrastructure of our EU and NATO partners on page 3, resp. page 13.
From the statement by EC VP Kaja Kallas: "The suspected vessel is part of Russia’s shadow fleet, which threatens security and the environment, while funding Russia’s war budget. We will propose further measures, including sanctions, to target this fleet." europa.eu/!k6cCfB
