@kaia if your lazy you can use the binary kernel, but the last 15 years I configured most options of the kernel.

@kaia depends. If it is relatively sure that you come across different devices like usb serial adapters i configure all or at least the most common. But stuff like GPU or network cards, where I don't expect different drivers i use only those.

Kernel config is more interesting to avoid occasional weird distro choices, like there's a lot of security toggles and of course some are a bit arbitrary from a distro pov.
And being able to use the version+patches you need, like for bugfixes or very recent hardware. -
