@kevinriggle @Bronwyn After living though about 5 housing crises and getting evicted during the pandemic in one, I told my partner all I wanted was to live somewhere without one, that I wanted there to be a second topic of conversation. After some research we moved to Bordeaux. Bordeaux builds housing to a price target. It's amazing. It's like the air itself is lighter. There's so many fewer homeless people. Everyone complains about other things.

@Bronwyn the fact that Bay Area homeowners seem to be fine with the idea that their children are priced out but not connect that to why people coming from elsewhere need to be accommodated is the purest form of evil to me. The people I grew up around did evil in many other ways but if you went to them and were like “also your kids can’t live here” they’d be like excuse me what

@kevinriggle instant endorsement.
I’m in alameda and we have lots of NIMBYs and they like to say “well I’m third generation alameda…” and every time I get the chance, I say I’m SIXTH generation San Francisco but I was only born there and not raised because WE DIDNT BUILT ENOUGH HOUSING FOR ME TO AFFORD TO LIVE THERE.

@Bronwyn I lived there four years. It was fine. I had fourteen housemates and in the whole time we had only one time there was anything remotely threatening to any of us (attempted mugging). The guy living in a tent on the sidewalk outside the house rescued my road atlas when my car window got busted in and gave it back to me. It’s purely aesthetics and lies that people are mad about it

@Bronwyn And yeah it fucking sucks that my neighbors don’t know where they’re going to sleep tonight, maybe let’s build a lot more fucking housing and stop whining about our property values okay

I walked from civic center Bart to the great American music hall (and back).
I passed many, many unhoused people and lots of people using various drugs.
None of them did anything remotely threatening to me.
I’m sure that’s not always the case, but I wonder how much of people feeling “unsafe” in cities like this is more that it’s just very very sad and uncomfortable to see.
