@nocontexttrek There was so much drama going on because of Roddenberry's lawyer (of all people) meddling with the writing, casting and show running that even his long-time friends who worked with him on Star Trek since the 60s were relieved when he died so they could actually get to work making a good show.
There's a reason Roddenberry was banned from the Wrath of Kahn. For TNG they wanted to put his name in the credits, write a check and for him to do nothing else.

@nocontexttrek This had to be one of the terrible "Star Trek Phase II" re-writes that stunk up the first couple seasons of TNG.
I went back and tried to rewatched TNG, in order, and ended up skipping to the third season, because that's when the writers and cast think it started getting good.
There must have been pent-up demand for new Star Trek on TV because the first couple seasons of TNG were objectively terrible. DS9, VOY and ENT all got off to good starts, but TNG was pretty bad.

@nocontexttrek To be fair, Gene Roddenberry, George Lucas, Stephen King, Tom Clancy and Tim Burton made much, much better media when someone else held the purse strings and could tell them, "No" and it would stand.
Remember how the plot of Star War I was a tax revolt? Lucas wanted that in A New Hope, along with Luke taking multiple passes to destroy the Death Star. His wife was the one to tell him they were bad ideas and 20th Century Fox agreed.
