If society doesn't want vigilante justice, then official justice needs to function and society should have thought about that before deciding a convicted felon who is constitutionally disqualified was "elected" president. Also, there needs to stop being exceptions to murder laws when the murder results in billions in profits.

@fishidwardrobe No, it's not the trolley problem. As a society we cannot make vigilante justice legitimate. And more people voted the MAGA GOP into power, they are the cause of CEOs like this. People need to vote out those who create these problems.@hellomiakoda

@RegGuy @hellomiakoda yes, but so did that guy he killed, for the same reason, and that was never going to happen. So it's — well, it's the trolley problem, actually.

@hellomiakoda Why? If he killed someone doesn't he deserve to receive some punishment?

Murder to protect more innocent people from being killed is justified.

@RegGuy @hellomiakoda I'm not sure you understand what I mean by the trolley problem: that both choices are wrong, that there are no "good" choices.
Voting has so far failed to fix the US health system for how many years now? Twenty? Forty? I don't think there is a "good" choice to fix this. Which, again, does not make murder right.

If I tried to stab your family to death (not a threat, I do not want to do this and I'm not even angry at you. It's just a hypothetical example), would it be wrong for you to kill me to stop me?

@hellomiakoda Then it has to not be murder. I disagree, I don't want to live in a world where we murder people like this.@fishidwardrobe

@fishidwardrobe @RegGuy If I'm on the secondary track, and all the people on the main track are innocent, pull the fucking lever!

@RegGuy @hellomiakoda So if I understand you correctly, you're okay with murder, just not *direct* murder.
To my way of thinking this *is* the trolley problem and you have decided not to pull the lever.

@fishidwardrobe I understand the classic trolley problem, which way to switch? Murder is wrong, period. Healthcare is f'd up, but isn't direct murder. We have to draw a line somewhere. @hellomiakoda

@fishidwardrobe @RegGuy My goal is to leave as much good as possible. The choice isn't that hard to me. If I can't save everyone, save as many as possible*
*assumes available info puts all potential victims on similar moral grounds. If, I dunno, one of the tracks is people covered in Nazi shit, they're not the ones I'm saving.

@hellomiakoda @RegGuy well, I agree. But that's still not a "good" act. Neither is leaving the lever alone.
So I get it if people don't want to. It's a hard choice. -

I feel confident with my moral bar being "people who don't deliberately harm innocent beings (outside of food) are okay and should be protected from harm when possible"

@hellomiakoda @RegGuy my take is usually the same — broadly Utilitarian. It's not perfect but it tends to point in the least bad direction.
(Of course it can also lead to some horrible moral cul-de-sacs. Have you read Ursula le Guin's _The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas_? ::shudder::)
