We dont need the Vatican or the golden chair, but the pretty building for the town you grew up in is organization.

  America's immigrants, to the extant that they actually are successful in life, are so because they are not American. They have tight knit communities, they have multi-generational households where grandma and grandpa cook for everybody, they excel academically, they have... religious customs... such that they offer charitable support for their in-group. They have child labor working unpaid overtime in their shops and restaurants.

  The eternal boomer made "youthful rebellion" his thing right up until contracting senile dementia.

  Honestly I'd still have my mom in my life if she was senile. It would be a goddamn relief.
  
  But Murphy's Law says she will never be senile. She will be just as verbally demanding as she has always been, weaponizing the past, targeting people's insecurities, etc.

  Hearing the way she ruminates over the past, ruminates over her ex, I realize that every time she says "that was so long ago I don't remember," abusing me as a child, she is lying.
  
  She'll do the vulnerable sweet grandma thing if she thinks someone will fall for it.
