    "Proton isn’t foolproof or bulletproof.
With a dedicated Linux version, there is no guesswork about which Proton version to use. No unintentional breakage. The developer is in full control of ensuring gamers have the best experience possible. And with Linux gaming on the rise, this is a good look for game developers to have."

Will ‘Civ 7’ Run On Steam Deck And Linux?
      from Jason Evangelho
Newly updated system requirements for 2025's Civ 7 release paint a positive outlook for Linux and Steam Deck users. Plus: does the game even NEED a Linux version?

ALSO! As a benchmark junkie, I can't wait to test the performance of the native Linux version, and the game running under Proton.

@serebit Oh I had forgotten about that. Here's to hoping the native version of Civ 7 is more performant and stable than the game running under Proton. I think Linux gaming would benefit from that outcome...

@killyourfm I'm interested too—Firaxis has had a spotty track record with Linux ports. XCOM 2 had a pretty terrible one.

@killyourfm there are great benefits to a native port, but it requires a bit of extra commitment from the developer to build, test and support a native version.

Most importantly, to avoid "unintentional breakage" in the future, the developers need to build their game against the linux runtime SDK.

This requirement tends to be ignored, which causes problems. The Steam Deck compatibility testing is helping improve this.

@TTimo Thanks for this insight! Given your background, I'm curious what you think about the continued existence of native Linux ports like this. From a studio's financial perspective, Is the time and resource investment justified for the relatively small Linux audience?

At this point, why WOULDN'T they just rely on Proton compatibility testing? (I'm not complaining about this; merely trying to see all angles)
