#cdnpoli I don't understand the stakes with Trudeau. If he steps down as party leader, won't there be an election inside the Liberal Party? Isn't that how Paul Martin became PM? That seems better than a snap election.

Evan Prodromou (evan@cosocial.ca)'s status on Saturday, 21-Dec-2024 09:27:47 JST Evan Prodromou @dcdeejay right. I think for the Liberals it's a lot better for the Party to have a Change Election (TM) than the country.

DC Deejay (dcdeejay@mastodon.online)'s status on Saturday, 21-Dec-2024 09:27:48 JST DC Deejay @evan I think the opposition, especially the "Conservatives" believe they will do better against the Liberals now than by allowing them the chance to restructure & regroup, thus the "OMG IT'S AN EMERGENCY ELECTION NOW AAAAAGGGHH" theatrics that they are doing their best to exacerbate.

M. Grégoire (mpjgregoire@cosocial.ca)'s status on Saturday, 21-Dec-2024 09:51:22 JST M. Grégoire @evan As recently as a month ago, PM Trudeau believed he was the Liberal with the best chance of defeating Mr. Poilievre [0]. He's been trying various measures for the last year to see if he could reverse the polls, without success, but something might yet come up — maybe the new US Administration. The PM's confidence has been shaken this week by the loss of support in his caucus and cabinet, but he hasn't decided yet.
[0] When you consider the alternatives, he might be right.
