I get the whole "don't comply in advance to fash" thing. I really do. But it's also something to consider relative power and privilege in doing so. A multi billion dollar corp? Make them fight you until hell freezes over, and then fight on the ice. An individual or small nonprofit who hosts a website? Especially a minority individual? Angering the powers that be could utterly destroy their lives. These are not the same.

@JessTheUnstill The folks we see complying in advance tho are ALL the ones who could afford not to. Billionaires, CEOs, newspaper owners, asshole opinion columnists, ...
For the rest of us, "don't comply in advance" is less personal advice and more reminding us of a standard by which we should be judging the elite.

@JessTheUnstill Also, regardless of whether we're talking the elite or the rest of us, "don't comply in advance" doesn't mean refusing things that have been demanded. That would be "don't comply", not "don't comply in advance".
Rather, "don't comply in advance" means don't guess what will make the fash "like you" (spoiler: they won't anyway) and rush to the front of the line to kiss their assess hoping to get some advantage over other people who don't do that.

@dalias It would be a fair statement to say I'm "complying in advance" by moving to a safer state. Transphobic fash want people like me gone? I'm leaving. Because the risks to me staying and fighting are more than I choose to accept.

@JessTheUnstill I don't think that's what any folks I know mean by "complying in advance".

@dalias @JessTheUnstill
Indeed, “don’t comply in advance” is advice targeted specifically at the people who •can• afford to stand their grown, in order to give cover to the people who can’t.(Also, separately: depriving a locality that refuses to protect you of your presence is a form of fighting back too.)

@JessTheUnstill I guess part of this is that you moving isn't really what they want. They want you to cease to exist, not regroup somewhere you're safe(r) and can continue to fight. They want you to denounce what you are, and denounce others.

But I see that mantra being weaponized against even little people these days. Hence the subtoot.

@JessTheUnstill @dalias I'd argue that what the fash transphobes actually want is for people like you to suffer and/or repent and/or die. Moving makes you resistant to their attempts to make those happen.
