All H-1B visas for the US for fiscal year 2025 have been fully used. There was a lottery in which only 3 out of 10 people were selected for the visa.

This means that even if you got a job offer, but didn't get selected in the lottery, tough luck.

Apparently people don't want to come here anymore?

I have this conversation often with other immigrant friends that *even in spite of* guns, healthcare situation, fascism, this place is still overwhelmingly attractive to *a lot of people* for many reasons.

The primary one being, I think, this:

I can think of few other countries to migrate to where, it feels like a bet that the challenges of immigration *will be worth it* in many dimensions. It is still true today *in spite of all the other things*.

Many other desired migration destinations are great for *their citizens* but don't present similar opportunities for most international immigrants across all socio-economic levels.

I don’t only mean economic, although that is important. As someone migrating from a very rich country, this is the only country in the world with *more* opportunities in my field. It is far beyond every other developed economy in many ways. Northern California alone has more good jobs than some entire developed nations.

But also on a social level, one can’t downplay the important of social integration. It’s much easier to be Anything- and American. Even if you never take citizenship.

@skinnylatte Many years ago, probably after the beginning of the "War on Terror" and subsequent excesses of government power and Islamophobia and general shittiness towards PoC, I felt sad about the future of the US

And I saw an interview with an immigrant from somewhere like Iraq or Afghanistan, and he was asked, "Do you think it was still worth coming here, [with all these restrictions on freedom]?"

And basically he said that what made this worthwhile wasn't the freedom, but the opportunity

And most important of all. I feel that as an immigrant, I’m able to clearly say here’s all the things that I like and here’s the things I really don’t. That’s important to me.

Because I’ve lived in many places and they mostly tell you you aren’t allowed to say those things as an immigrant. Because you’re not the right color. In many places, it’s their liberals who pull that shit. So I always say America is a shit bucket but it is my shit bucket now.

Honestly, is there any higher praise than that? Not some "lalala everything is perfect" bullshit but "I see the flaws and I choose those flaws over these other flawed places". I appreciate your perspective, and welcome to the shit-show / clown-factory. ;-)

@skinnylatte Interestingly Australians have their own separate work visa (E3) to the USA, and I understand that quota doesn't usually get filled: https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/temporary-workers/e-3-specialty-occupation-workers-from-australia
