Imagine writing something like "however you feel about James Kilpatrick's views, you have to acknowledge they're in the mainstream of US politics and journalists are always targets for hate."
Or "as an important figure in our discourse, Father Coughlin is the target of much ire, but his views about Jewish people are firmly planted in the mainstream of US and UK political discourse..."

I've noticed the same pattern in articles defending him:
1. pointing out that he's a "journalist," but only as a status signifier — no attention paid to the actual *work* of journalism, journalistic ethics, &c.
2. defending his "opinions" or "positions" as normal — no attention paid to his weird alliance with "kiwi farmers," the invasive personal frame he takes when women like Julia Serano criticize him, &c.
Singal never *does* anything in these stories, he simply *is*
