   I used to read news like this about N America and be like, what they don’t have cafes and restaurants where people live? What a strange way to live

   Then I worked in a N American city government and got to see how much weirder it really is.

   Still super weird to me. I live in a ‘bad neighborhood’ coz I have tasty food downstairs and round the corner. I don’t know how to live differently

     it's even weirder with remote working and WFH these days- there's just nowhere to escape to for an hour or two for a change of scenery without having to drive somewhere.

     when I lived in London, there were at least 4-5 places withing walking distance to get a coffee and sit with a laptop, or local shops, or local pubs if you really weren't into being productive although some wised up and got fancy coffee machines too.

     in Canada where I am now - nada.

     @maya_b I wonder how downtown city recovery in N America compares to the rest of the world because of stuff like this.

     I live on the fringe of downtown SF and I would never voluntarily go into the financial district or union square because the shops are weird, there aren’t the nice coffee places spread out over a dense area, there’s just random soulless places coz only big corps can afford downtowns.

     Rising rents also killed off a lot of NYC family run local businesses - some that had been passed down through generations - and replaced with loss-making chain coffee shops.

     It's a weird balance.

     There was a hole-in-the-wall family sandwich shop in London that did solid business for decades until they put all kids through school, and retired. No chain has survived there since.

     Plus chain-shop jobs =/= wealth (relative) and retirement makers like the sandwich shop

     @monsoonrains there are pros and cons about this place, namely that i don't think i can live somewhere else at this point in my life, but there are some things i don't really like about it, like cars
