   Considering replacing the i.MX8M SOC board in my laptop with one of the compute module options available, because this specific chip has Wayland support but no X11.

   Upgrading hardware so I can run older software is a hell of a place to be.

   Wayland might, in theory, someday, be better for "the desktop", whatever that means, than X11. But the migration path they've chosen was _so_ clumsy and joyless that it's hard to see a future where it's the unambiguous choice, much less the best choice.

     @jrconlin @mhoye Run an X server that displays to Wayland and completely ignore the Wayland layer. Then you have working accessibility and standard application support.

     FWIW, the Framework 13 mainboard runs X11 just fine. (I have the Ryzen 7040 running lxqt, which is X11 only.) You can run those "stand alone" if you really wanted.

     I do kinda worry at what point app makers decide "Nope, we're gonna do only Wayland now!" and I've got to scramble to figure out how to deal with that nightmare, but I'm guessing it's still a ways off.
