I often joke: If it's not jank, it's not free.

Unfortunately, #FreeSoftware is less convenient, but we use it anyway, because Google/whoever doesn't deserve power over us.

People don't care. I don't know what to do about that.

      @kolev

I'll tell you, with all sincere honesty that as I've gotten older, my views on FLOSS haven't reduced, but they've changed somewhat as I think about other needs.

I gave the example of people using Facebook to see pictures of their family. Telling a grandmother who wants to se photos of her grandkid that she shouldn't because Google is able to excerpt control over her is not likely to win her over.

I used online dating apps, mostly OKCupid, to meet women in order to date. OKCupid's Javascript is non-Free, and they held my dating data.

I made a considered choice to trade in that for the possibility of meeting someone who I'd want to date.

We all make these kinds of choices and in any kind of negotiation, whether it's in business, with friends, or even in a relationship is to try to put yourself in the head of the other person and figure out what they're thinking, needing, what their priorities are and what their values are.

@serge what you say about your thought process seems to be common reasoning, but to me it's wishful thinking at best

it's hard to believe that anyone who is kept artificially information-deprived about a program will be able to get ahead of its maker with it. even if at some point in time someone might get more value from it than what the maker extracts, the maker, who can control all the parameters of the engagement once it gains control over the user, will proceed to adjust them so as to extract any value the user expected to make.

this is even more noticeable in the enshittocene, wherein users can't even keep on running older versions of programs they carefully chose, as providers corral them to settings in which the maker can impose changes or cut users off in a whim.

it's not a game anyone can reasonably expect to win while playing a role of subjugated user

Didn't I ask you not to contact me again when you said something antisemitic to me?

If not, let me be clear: I don't have time for antisemites in my life.

As for your criticism of my Free Software beliefs, believing in this artificial idea of purity is what causes so many people so much pain and stress, and you're adding to it. You see someone talking about severe depression because of this stress and your response is to double down?

This idea of believing that Free Software ideals are more important than the literal life of someone is very foul.

Let me be clear: As long as you continue to harbor antisemitic beliefs and believe that it's acceptable to double down on someone's depression because of your ideology, don't message me and don't tag me. If you do so again, I will consider it harassment and act accordingly.

@kolev it sucks that some people really don't care. it's disappointing, but we don't need to bring them over to our side before we make a move

in the early days of free software movement, in which we set out to build better software with whoever wished to cooperate to that end, without needing to convince everyone before getting started, and then, as more and more great software has become available, more and more people and businesses have joined to cooperate in developing, maintaining and sustaining it.

the challenge now is that software has become a major part of everyone's lives, and there's intense pressure for us all to allow others to control the devices we use for our own computing and communications

I don't see that operating as individuals we can overcome that pressure, most of what we get is frustration and exhaustion.

what we need is, again, community: gathering online those of us who wish to live in freedom, leaving the doors open to those who wish to join us and help build this better way of living

I envision that, like the Tor network is an overlay on top of a preexisting network, this better society we could make would be an overlay on top of preexisting societies, at least at first.

the more we succeed, the more people will want to join in, and then, at some point, we may be able to stop depending on the underlaying society and live the life we hope for. it's a long way, no doubt.

I disagree! Covenient is, what you are used to. I use Open Source only, without any complains. Of course some devs are stupid as commercial software is too. But I'm very happy that most devs are open for suggestions and bug reports.

I have no recollection of a past encounter with you, I'm afraid. it's not reasonable to expect me to recall everyone who happens to cross my timeline and elicit a response from me. I don't have antisemitic views, so odds are you're mistaking me for someone else, or, in the odd chance it was indeed me you interacted with, you jumped to incorrect conclusions about me. if interacting with me disturbs you so, and you wish to no longer see interactions with this account, that's your choice, and you can implement it on your own by blocking me. I'm afraid my faulty memory doesn't enable me to promise to recall you to the point of knowing not to contact you if you show up again, and I don't wish to partially blind myself to diverse thoughts so as to meet your IMHO unreasonable and imposing demand. seriously, please block me instead of demanding of me something I can't do.

before I leave you alone for now, I wish to point out that I knew nothing about your depression; that piece of information is just not visible to me. being quite familiar with that condition from personal experience, I wanted to express my solidarity and my wishes for you to recover from it. may you have a better life

@lxo I tried RMSing. It did not work. I became socially isolated.

exactly, going isolated is how we lose. been there myself. I believe the error is not in going strict, but in going strict alone. we have to find and connect with, and build if need be, communities that share our yearnings in order for that to succeed. we are not alone. even if we're not a majority, we are many.

@lxo Except local, in-person groups are harder to form. There are GLUGs, but there's more to life than user groups. Should Christians start a free software-compliant church? That would be weird.

"It's not reasonable to expect me to recall everyone I harass." is quite the statement.

You are a sick, disturbed person harassing @kolev when they've expressed mental health issues, you are a sick person for harassing me with antisemitism in the past, and you are a person who clearly demonstrates a lack of boundaries and dangerous tendencies when they are asked to stop and they don't continue.

You should be in no position to speak for Free Software, as these actions belay a fundamental misunderstanding of the principles of Free Software, choice, and consent.

Get help, and leave me alone.

don't you tell me what to do, mr self-entitled. you don't know me. if you don't wish to hear from me, you know what you have to do. if I get another response from you in this thread, I'll know you didn't block me as I recommended, and that makes you the abuser. please stop harassing me, lying about me, and if you appear in my timeline again, don't be surprised if I respond without recognizing you. you're definitely not memorable to me.

I was talking about online communities, really, because that's where I've had most success. like other minorities, it's not so easy to find enough of us in a single location, but the internet allows us to find each other, regardless of distance, and form communties

I guess building an overlay society will involve more than just exchanging ideas online. enabling us to avoid relying on nonfree impositions by third parties, making our overlay society self-sufficient, will involve getting all sorts of services and trades and whatnot provided by community members in ways that we can deal with. that may take time, but every step in that direction helps IMHO
