    17 J is a fuck of a lot of energy.

      @Canageek Even not dividing by molar number, 17 J is a lot of energy to just have sitting there.
      Similar kind of thing to how if you see a Coulomb just sitting there, you run the fuck away.

      @xgranade So I've done reactions relating on the 800 kJ range.... (Al + Fe2O3 -> Al2O3)

      Which to be fair is a lot of energy but not like a terrifying amount.

      17 J is only enough to raise the temperature of 1g water by a little under 1°C.

      are you sure you're not missing a prefix there?

      @Canageek I am *quite* sure. It may not be a lot from a caloric perspective, but I can say from personal experience that 17 J is a lot.

      @xgranade not sure how you're defining a lot then, because that's very little energy from a chemistry perspective? Like even for one bond. C-H is about 100 kcal, C-C ~80 kcal.

      1 cal is a little over 4 J

      so C-H is on the order of 400,000 J

      @xgranade so I just went over my shelf and discovered that I did not keep any of the textbooks that would be useful for double checking my memory with regards to units and amounts of energy.

      so the only textbook I currently own with that sort of information is my grandfather's that he used when he was a teacher XD

      It did confirm I remember my energy is correctly, and it's not like they've changed since 1969 XD

      @Canageek True, but chemical potentials are just fucking gargantuan compared to the mechanical or electrical energy you're more likely to encounter in day to day life. I think its fair to say than something on the order of a millionth of a lightning bolt is huge. A compact surge protector can absorb like 500 J, so 17 J isn't too out of line with home mains power surges.

      @xgranade ahhhh. See I'm thinking of fire as a day to day that people encounter day to day, and a candle flame is multiple J, like it wouldn't take long to raise a mL of water by 1 degree at all, and no one would say a candle is a lot.

      @Canageek I mean, I would if I stuck my finger in it! But yeah, I take the point.

      Only if you hold it there! I mean, my Mom let us use beeswax candles for Ukrainian Easter eggs when I was a little kid, it's pretty hard to burn yourself.

      AND since I've got the video handy: Lesson one you learn when doing glassblowing: Toching fire

      (I miss doing this SO MUCH. It feels warm and wet and nice)
