@anna Italy's legal system only recognizes male and female. But the Italian Constitutional Court ruled this year that non-binary people do, in fact, exist and that they're entitled to the same equal rights. However they also found in the same ruling that you're not currently allowed to register legally with a non-binary gender. The court gave that job to the Italian parliament, but you're not going to see that with the current government.

This article has some details: https://verfassungsblog.de/non-binary-gender-markers-italy/

      Non-Binary Gender Markers in Italy?
      from Anna Kompatscher
In July, the Italian Constitutional Court recognised the existence of non-binary people for the first time in Italian history. Although the decision as such is a big step for queer rights in Italy, the Court stops halfway. In contrast to the German “Dritte Option” decision, the Court does not set clear instructions or deadlines for the Parliament. Italy’s current far-right political climate likely means non-binary gender markers will not be introduced by the Italian Parliament anytime soon.

@anna I don't personally know noone, but they'll be forced to do it at the very least for our SSN number, which is an alphanumeric string with a binary gender coded inside: https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codice_fiscale

The code is assigned even to simple immigrants and it's needed at least for tax and healthcare purposes.
It's not a secret (opposed i.e. to the US' one) and generable starting from name, surname, date and place of birth, so you can do it yourself here for example: https://codicefiscale.com/

@anna I don't know anything about Italian politics. Maybe the next, less right-wing government would be more likely to introduce such a change?

I would bet on the EU eventually making requirements for its member states, but that's going to take a couple years. Germany and Iceland legally recognize non-binary genders.
