#Biden pardoning his son after he said he would not and running for a second term after he said he would not was clearly unacceptable. If you give your word, you have to keep your word. But to use that to conveniently ignore the far worse record of #Trump on that score once again shows the selective outrage of the Trump supporters.
Not appointing an aggressive AG and affording #DOJ full power to go after the insurrectionists and the masterminds behind the insurrection will remain the single biggest failure of #Biden, no matter his other accomplishments.
>> I’m not necessarily a Biden apologist, but I do think that if you’ve made a decision about a thing, and then later you learn more information about the situation, it’s legitimate to change your mind.
2 wks after #Biden won in 2020, he privately told advisers that he doesn't want his presidency to be consumed by investigations of his predecessor #Trump.
3 wks after that, an insurrection happened on #Jan6, but Biden never corrected course.
@RealJournalism I’m not necessarily a Biden apologist, but I do think that if you’ve made a decision about a thing, and then later you learn more information about the situation, it’s legitimate to change your mind.
In this case, what changed between the time Biden said he wouldn’t and later when he did?
Trump won. Trump’s minions generated an “enemies list”. Biden’s family is on the list. Said minions were nominated for positions in federal law enforcement.
I really enjoy @emptywheel's writing because she has the ability to #LiftTheFog and always comes with receipts.
Nobody said it was #Garland's fault alone, but this seems difficult to refute:
DOJ's approach “can be traced to Garland’s desire to [avoid] allegations of partisanship… Inside [DOJ]… some lawyers have complained that the AG's determination to steer clear of any claims of political motive has chilled efforts to investigate #Trump.
@rameshgupta@RealJournalism I agree 100%. He did a lot of awesome things; however, there’s a non-zero chance that his missteps on the insurrection will cost us our democracy.
That said, @emptywheel wrote a detailed report about how the investigative delays weren’t entirely on Garland, but were significantly impacted by widespread republican stonewalling and delays (some legal). She’s a lot more informed than I am.
