@_elena @z428 Self-hosting is certainly not accessible for the masses right now.

I envision the equivalent of an iPhone-like server that sits in your house and has an easy interface like the app-store to install self-hosted applications, hiding the complexity of databases, storage, networking / load balancing, etc.

As for your VPS self-hosting costs - yes more expensive if you're just self-hosting Ghost, but if you also self-hosted plausible and other services on same VPS, the costs go down.

What has been on my mind today: the high costs of digital sovereignty and privacy.

      I quit #Substack and pay 30€ a month for a Creator plan on #Ghost (approx. 360 Euros a year).

I quit Dropbox in favor of #Proton Unlimited (drive but also mail, calendar. VPN). 119 Euros/year.

I nuked my Google Analytics accounts in favor of #Plausible (90 Euros/year).

I'm HAPPY to pay for these services & yet I'm highly aware of my privilege.

#BigTech won't fade in popularity anytime soon bc it's free 😩

@_elena interesting, if its not a "professional" endeavour then I fail to see why someone would select SubStack/Ghost over a more useful option like micro.blog, which would give the option of blog/microblog/podcast/fediverse integration and a much lower monthly cost … likewise for such a user I think analytics is an unnecessary cul-de-sac, but there are free solutions if you require …

@_elena Exactly. Not even talking about that other option to "just click yourself a server somewhere and run infrastructure on your own" which will amount to similar bills if done at a comparable level and/or take much more time one needs to be able to have at hand. It's a nasty problem that seems hard to fix on an individual level as it always requires being privileged in this way or the other - like, also, buying organic food or fair-trade clothes. It's disheartening once you dig deeper. 😟

Well, Bigtech itsn't free! You only don't pay with fiduciary money, but with your data! 😪

@_elena You may want to consider who you give your funds to and their ownership. Volunteer, community driven, not-for-profit organizations abound with free utilities as well: one can donate to support them but not required to use.

@_elena Yeah, is see few people recognize the financial barrier to privacy. The common response to this is "it's not free because you're paying with data/being advertised to/etc."

I think that misses the nuance that groceries can't be paid for with data. People will always choose to eat and lose privacy, as opposed to pay for privacy and starve.

      • YunoHost :disability_flag:

@tommi @yunohost @_elena as a self-hoster, that requires skills / knowledge, even with things like yunohost, and time¹, and having either is just another form of privilege

I'm thankful to have those, and love self-hosting the services I do self-host (or rather community-host: I share the hosting tasks with some friends, and provide services for family members who would never be able to self-host on their own, but having access to those friends is yet another form of privilege)

¹ or more time, to be able to gain those skills and knowledge

@_elena You could self-host all of this just as easily using @yunohost and a VPS for 15 €/month MAX, or, even better, just with a RaspberryPi plugged in your modem.

Email is the only thing that is a nightmare self-hosted, to be fair.

@_elena sadly the big rent-seekers of the web can outspend everyone else. I don't see infrastructure being treated as such by regulators in the near future, to make it accessible to people without fairly sized capital investments.

@_elena True. That's why I still think running "your own instance" of something isn't a good idea. Getting together with others to find some way of funding sustainable infrastructure seems much more necessary these days. Including of course how the actual software is being developed. Not that I expect anything like this to happen anytime soon, but maybe I'm still permitted to dream.🙈

@_elena Yep, it goes fast, unless you self-host (but more complex too).

I ddn't know about Plausible! That looks like a great solution for analytics. Thanks for the tip :)

@_elena Yeah, I've seen this before as well. At the moment, I hope keeping my posts on my own blog and using micro.blog as a backup and means of distributing these to other platforms helps a bit, but it will not help protecting against loss of conversations, especially private ones. (That's another thing that sometimes bugs me - everyone who used e-mail before was sure that moving from one account to another _of course_ would not just keep a list of contacts out there but also a full history of messages sent and received through an old account so it would be easy to reply to conversations prior to that move. That's just how I would things expect to be, and I'm still trying to wrap my head around why Mastodon/AP isn't even remotely there yet, why this hasn't been a non-negotiable design priority from day one.)

@nrdufour Adding to that, unsure if it passed by here: tinylytics.app/ also might be interesting to look into, for privacy-preserving, lightweight analytics. It's a bit cheaper than plausible but also offers less features, still might be an alternative to keep in mind then and now. 🙂

@_elena @z428 Check out PikaPods. They host a wide range of apps for you for a quite reasonable price. Not affiliated and haven't tried out Ghost with them. https://www.pikapods.com/

Probably best to go with Ghost directly (if only because you support its development).

@joe @_elena @z428 Unsure if this is what you're referring to but this is a (mostly French so far) project seems to be aiming for that sort of goal - plug the tiny server in to your router and click-install apps - https://internetcu.be/

It's supported in part by some regional nonprofit internet providers
