Ok… so a “Ghost Gun” is a firearm the government doesn’t know about… but the government isn’t supposed to keep lists of firearms or who owns them…

I think to remedy this problem we just need to get rid of the lists and then we won’t have any “ghost guns”, we will only have firearms.

A ghost gun includes those vintage 1900s guns at the antique shop, or a gun you machine yourself on a lathe.

It use to be fairly involved to track individual firearm sales:

...but the ATF has been caught keeping illegal lists that subvert the tracing process.

I didn't know about the tracing through individual parts and machining purchases. I guess if Amazon/eBay/etc. just give up the information without a warrant (monthly?!), it's not illegal ... and I'd say "fuck those companies" .. but I already stopped shopping at Amazon in 2016 and deleted my PayPal account years ago. .. without eBay and NewEgg, there's literally nowhere for me to buy a lot of the PC parts and electronics I use.

The death of retail stores has had very serious consequences.

..also, what do you bet that article was edited by the FBI asking them to and they just complied?

There's no telling how many guns we have in America—and when one gets used in a crime, no way for the cops to connect it to its owner. The only place the police can turn for help is a Kafkaesque agency in West Virginia, where, thanks to the gun lobby, computers are illegal and detective work is absurdly antiquated. On purpose. Thing is, the geniuses who work there are quietly inventing ways to do the impossible. "We just basically track internet purchases from eBay, PayPal, Amazon, different various online companies. We get a list every other month, backdated a month, with people purchasing components that could possibly create a ghost gun, like the rails, the 3-D printer."
