    I have no strong opinions about news out of Syria based on conditions I cannot confirm, but...

    It's pretty wild that the people emphatically telling me "these guys are no longer Al-Qaeda" are the very same people who emphatically told me "saying the rebels are Al-Qaeda is straight up Russian propaganda and you're the real terrorist" less than a decade ago...

    Imma wait and see how this one shakes out before I develop strong feelings for any more "plucky freedom fighters" Pig Empire media loves.

      @AnarchoNinaWrites From what I've seen ppl who actually have family there seem to be cautiously happy.

      @dalias I can see that making sense, Assad certainly was a peach (heavy sarcasm.)

      But color me skeptical of the idea that Western media's jubilation and attempts to tell me how to think about these evens spring from an abundance of concern for the Syrian people.

      Better or worse isn't in any way for me to decide, but given the people who're big excited about this on my TV, I am very curious what the Pig Empire stands to gain from this - because their behavior tells me it's SOMETHING.

      @AnarchoNinaWrites I'm not accusing you of this, but seeing everything in terms of what the Pig Empire has to gain or lose is really a tankie worldview. This can be a win for the ppl living under the regime and their families regardless of what profits the superpowers might make.

      @dalias Again I think you're missing that what I'm talking about is not the events in Syria, but the way they're being presented on my TV. You're focused on one thing, but that one thing is not only not for me to decide but also beyond my ability to know.

      I would assume the removal of Assad is seen as a positive in its own right by many many Syrians. It's just not that relevant how I feel about it. What I want to know is what my media is trying to sell me here, and why.

      @AnarchoNinaWrites@jorts.horse @dalias@hachyderm.io

      you're the thing we're reasoning backwards about world events based what the western propaganda is saying, this will not give you an objective understanding of the situation

      as to "what the Pig Empire stands to gain from this" they are saying it out loud, Assad is allied with Hezbollah and Syria is used as a passage for Iran to arm Hezbollah, Hamas and others, and they hope they can use the new syrian gov as some kind of proxy against Hezbollah / Iran, as Turkey seeks to use them against the SDF/Kurds ( and trump will likely cut off US arms to them next year ) BUT syrians aren't just mindless pawns of anyone else, and the masses of Syrians did this, not any one armed group, i find it doubtful any future government will be Israeli stooges, espeically while they deal with flows of Refugees from Lebenon, and Palestinians in Syria have long been active in the anti assad resistance

      Likewise reasoning backwards by what western randos say about Syria on the internet is no way to go about it, you can real or talk to Syria anarchists/leftists, non are fans of al Sham al celebrate the fall of Bashar, as with always solidarity with the people of Syria against all oppressors
