If they can't produce their own original new science I don't think it's sustainable. And on an "alien planet" or living in a new way that humans never have before in a space hab? There is SO MUCH science to be done.

And that's not even getting into the art and music and stories the people would need to relate to their new world and each other.

And I thought that all of that new science was at least part of the whole point of such a project from the standpoint of how it could benefit humans on Earth.

You don't get that with a space plantation that just exists to make money and that requires people to be shipped out there just to keep the population stable.

(although importing people is how the US worked for a long time so it is not without precedent.)

@futurebird @frank @jannem @dx I'm all in favour of NASA, ESA, JAXA, et al running a humans-on-board scientific expedition or even research base on Mars! Along the lines of the Antarctic research bases. (It'd solve huge numbers of problems created by today's reliance on robots.) They'd probably need to grow food and recycle waste, too. But a *colony* implies permanent autonomy and replication, and the bar for that is incredibly high.

@MedeaVanamonde @futurebird @frank @jannem @dx Elon Musk *says* he's aiming for Barsoom but the real destination he has in mind is Gor.
