This #BandcampFriday
I am asking those of you who pay for #streaming services like #Spotify to consider spending the same amount of money on direct payments to independent musicians. #Bandcamp is one way to do this! There's also Faircamp, @mirlo, Jam Coop, Subvert and many more. Ko-FI and Patreon too!

Ether Diver (etherdiver@ravenation.club)'s status on Saturday, 07-Dec-2024 08:19:44 JST Ether Diver Your $12-15 payment every month to Spotify disappears into a blackhole and is noticed and appreciated by exactly NO ONE. By contrast, you could spend that same amount today at Bandcamp, OWN three albums because of it, AND make the day of each of those artists.
Seriously, a $5 sale can change a life.

Ether Diver (etherdiver@ravenation.club)'s status on Saturday, 07-Dec-2024 08:19:45 JST Ether Diver This situation is extremely toxic and self destructive to musicians. It is entirely unsustainable and it WILL destroy what's left of the creative industry, until the only music you hear is oldies and AI slop generated by modeling what people liked about those oldies. Nightmare shit.

Ether Diver (etherdiver@ravenation.club)'s status on Saturday, 07-Dec-2024 08:19:46 JST Ether Diver Streaming services steal the creative labor of independent musicians and give that money to tech and record company execs. The money set aside for paying actual artists goes *overwhelmingly* to the top 1% of artists -- the Beatles, Beyonces and Bruce Springsteens and Taylor Swifts of the world.

Ether Diver (etherdiver@ravenation.club)'s status on Saturday, 07-Dec-2024 21:32:29 JST Ether Diver All Spotify offers you is convenience, and while I am not knocking convenience, you are trading a LOT for that convenience. I'm not telling you NOT to use Spotify, I am just saying that can't be where all your music money goes to. It just can't be. Not if you love music!

Skadi (skadi@bolha.us)'s status on Sunday, 08-Dec-2024 01:59:47 JST Skadi Bandcamp is very US-centric, so it's not really for me. The fact that Spotify recommends me oldies from Brazil, new stuff from Norway, music from France and Nigeria is just... nice. I like diversity of languages and styles and Spotify recommendation algorithm works well for me since it takes it in account.
I understand that these artists might not be well paid by the biggest streaming platforms, but I wouldn't listen to them if I had to pay $5 to listen to an album anyway. 😟
