        Tsunamis | SF72
What is tsunami? A tsunami is a series of ocean waves that can cause dangerous coastal flooding and other damage. Tsunamis are usually caused by a severe earthquake or landslide that displaces a large amount of ocean water. Tsunami waves can last for many hours; the first wave is almost never the largest. Tsunamis can also cause strong, unpredictable currents off beaches and in marinas and harbors, making it dangerous to be in those areas. The National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) issues four general types of tsunami bulletins:

@sipi_xo right after the quake there was a risk of tsunami. They recommended people in some coastal areas start considering evacuation.

I guess something happened that they saw it’s not needed anymore.

But yes you’re right it needs to be more accessible

@skinnylatte this is so confusing. Why were people advised to evacuate? Also, it's hard for me to read/understand this... (not your fault, but wish this info was more accessible)

@skinnylatte That is from the Hawaii center - the Alaskan center has not yet lifted the warning for California/Oregon

Deleting my info about tsunami threat passing as I’ve been informed that was for another place. Not for CA / OR.

      Sorry for the confusion

Will post if there are specific updates soon

The city’s Department of Emergency Management took the sirens offline at the end of 2019 for security upgrades and they are still absent.
