(I was as perfectly happy when I had a literal handful of people I was engaging with here eight years ago as I am now. Remember the Dunbar number, people. Remember quality over quantity. Small is beautiful and all that.)

@aral : people will come on Mastodon, have literally 10 times more interaction here than elsewhere then complain because "the number of followers on my profile is lower than the one I have on X even if 99% of those are bots and non-maintained account"

@aral The thing is, we've let corporate social media conflate "communication" & "broadcasting" as if they're the same thing, which is also why TikTok is referred to as social media, even though it absolutely isn't. This has turned social presence (often including IRL!) into a personal branding exercise & a lot of people aren't even aware of it - all they have is confused, unrealistic & mostly undesirable expectations, foisted upon them by someone else entirely against their interests...

It's impossible to avoid in some places. I've left restaurants because people were talking about their investors, IPO, or stupid Internet company extremely loudly.
They have nothing else to talk about apparently.

@JFreeWolny Well that’s eye-opening… so Followers/primary account/dormant: 914 pages x 40 = 36,560
Which would put my non-dormant followers count at ~7,640 (~44.2K - 36,560).
What’s most interesting for me with this is how few people you need to have a good experience and meaningful conversations, etc. I had more “engagement” (hate that word) on here almost from the get go.
Would love to see the dormant account stats for the other networks. Assuming they wouldn’t be as forthcoming.

Go to preferences/Follows Followers
Set: followers, dormant
How many pages? Don't say it, i'm not interested, just look. (AFAIR it's 40 persons per page)
Now think about someone with account created in 2022 with 1k foillowers what means about 80 alive ppl to talk, and not growing (2 new, 3 away, 3 new, 2 away...)
Is it a problem? Not really, but same time it's fact.
And yes abadoned accounts in similar numbers you can find everywhere, but there ou are getting more new than loosing old, it's the difference.
