    San Francisco real estate.

    1. Craigslist should just automatically make any listing that claims it has 2 parking spaces in the city as a scam
    2. As well as anything below $2500
    3. I really struggle with the layout that is, open a door and see a narrow hallway. I don’t like homes without a wide open living room (really hate when the living room is.. a room). That’s 60% of the homes here
    4. I can’t deal with carpet. And coin laundry
    5. We never used a laundromat until we moved here

Whenever we view a home we go to the stove and check the vents. Very often real estate agents are puzzled as to why we expect and hope to see better exhaust than is often available. We cook strong smelling foods! In a wok! Most exhaust options in SF apartments are.. inadequate.

Not in a rush to move, but just casually looking and there are already parts of SF that make me go ‘can’t live in that suburb!’ So real suburbs are impossible for me

I LIKE apartments, and density. Any time I think about moving ‘for more space’ it’s like a really major mental block for me. I have mostly lived in cities with 5-15M people and I enjoy city life. Even parts of the west side of SF are too scary and quiet for me.

I really dislike Victorians. Just everything about them. The layout. The stuffy feeling. The furniture. The lack of insulation. The way they look. I never thought I would have such strong feelings about them but I really dislike them. Sadly that means not wanting to look at a large number of listings as a result. I just don’t think I can happily live in one.

@elliots yeaaaaaaa i would want a large window nearby. Not to mention how for nearly every time of cooking we do, smoke alarms can.. go off

@skinnylatte Recirculating stove vents became a deal breaker for me after I looked at the AQI meter while we were cooking!

@skatercat I feel more happy to be alone among 5-15M people. There’s always a fun place to go to on my own, around other people.

@skinnylatte I’ve always lived in the suburbs (and only 1.5m people city) so I find 5-15m scarily crowded! Where do you go to get away from everyone?

Parking space measured in Honda super cub sizes.😁

Heard only nasty things of the SF housing market from colleageues So good luck finding something!

Some neighborhoods have such different vibes. Like where I am right now my Vietnamese neighbors and I have no issues propping out doors open when we use our woks for massive stir fry or deep fry dishes.

I look at the apartments across the street in Pac Heights and I’m like, nobody has ever deep fried anything in a wok round here

I’m always of the opinion that we should hold out a bit and try to buy a home or rent in the East Bay. Spiritually and culinarily the east bay is a better fit for me. However I am scared of the potentially mire car-centric lifestyle that might require. (I don’t drive.. ever, yet?)

I guess it depends on where in the east bay. I feel like I might be happy in Emeryville.

Sometimes I like to pretend I’m fresh off the boat from China and that I’m planning to buy a house IN CASH

It makes it so blatantly obvious how differently people treat you!

@skinnylatte Oakland will give you MUCH better access to Asian groceries & food, cool music scene, theater, film, dance, performance, weirdness, and all-around love and acceptance. (A) Big LGBTQIA community (B) big Asian community (C) big foodie community.

@thepoliticalcat yes, I love Oakland. Just haven’t found the part of it I feel like I really want to live in. Realistically near Temescal or somewhere walkable but who knows.

@skinnylatte I lived in Emeryville a few years, many years ago. It was weird, I liked it. Does it have the density you want? It’s not the tenderloin.

@zackstern more new apartment, more parks, proximity to Amtrak, nicer roads than Oakland, bike lanes, and my favorite turkish restaurant (simurgh), and increasingly, friends (and a much younger community than sf)

@skinnylatte I go back sometimes, yeah it has built a lot more housing/apartments. Oh and Amtrak for your ride to the aquarium sounds good.

I’ll try the restaurant part of Simurgh sometime. I’ve still just been enjoying the bakery aspect when I go.

@zackstern the breads and baklava are all great but they also legit have some of the best kebabs I’ve had in this country (excluding Detroit)

@skinnylatte I enjoyed them more in the small studio apartment or even SRO form factor than the more common and expensive multi-room format. I think they look cute but I don’t think I’d want to live in one again without having time and money to make some pretty large changes.
