     @azureazure @lucy Although thankfully the mp3 patents have expired, mp3 was always a terrible format and should not be used for practical reasons alone.
     
     If you care that much about storage space (many, many FLAC's will fit a 1TB HDD), you want opus, as that can encode better audio quality at a smaller or the same space than mp3.

     @taylan @lucy @azureazure It is possible for patents to be royalty-free but still proprietary.
     
     All original mp3 patents have expired (and free mp3 encoders/decoders exist), but many, many invalid patents on audio encoding mathematical schemes that arguably apply to mp3 have since been granted.
