@matt so this is the start. I’m aiming to finish this next week: https://code.squarecows.com/ric/mastodon-setup-guide

@Ric I would actually be very interested in that, yes! I've kept mine totally vanilla because it is a little clunky to customize. Interested to see how you've solved it.

@Ric ordinarily I 100% agree. Everything else that I host is managed with Docker Compose. But Mastodon feels a little clunky in its Docker implementation sometimes. And this'll be running on pretty much a dedicated host (LXC) anyway so not concerned about contamination. Good to know you're happy with it though. I must say, it's been running solid for 2 years for me, so I don't have specific concerns.

@matt I guess the only clunky bits I find is if you want to customise the image for say a custom theme or to increase the char count etc. I’m happy to share my compose files if you’re interested. I’m almost finished writing up a big how to guide.

@matt I have a really nice setup in docker using compose. It even includes open search and libre translate. For me I find this the neatest way to run software without contamination of the host.

      Question for mastodon admins....

I'm currently running my single-user instance in Docker. I'm about to move it to a new server, and am wondering whether to stick with Docker to host it or do a more conventional install, probably in an LXC.

The Docker approach doesn't seem to simplify things like it does with some other apps I run. This would be a good opportunity to switch if I were going to.
