    https://hyfin.org/2024/11/29/could-blacksky-emerge-as-black-twitters-spiritual-successor-on-bluesky/

Good overview of the man behind Blacksky and what he believes and how he's building. Really cool stuff, but I kept having the same thought when reading this article: "This should have been the fediverse."

    Too bad.

@elsantonegro I'm not an expert but this is just a feed rather than an independent instance

@tillshadeisgone Is this truly another independent ATProto instance? Is this the first one?

@tillshadeisgone Really interesting. Keep reading to the end if you want some details of what they are doing (including, to some extent, technical details). Whether we could do this here, worth thinking about but so many details (such as the existence of feeds) are different enough that it would require some pretty deep thinking about both software and cultural aspects.

Yeah it is really interesting. I mentioned Rudy's Tech Talk in a reply from another account (which doesn't seem to have federated broadly, not sure what's up about that) , it really digs down into the details. Also his three-part series starting at Blacksky: Expressing the Black Everyday in a New Digital Space is wonderful ... that, along with his other posts, really opened my eyes to what's possible with AT Proto (although of course all the concerns about and criticisms of Bluesky as a venture-funded startup that tolerates terfs and nazis remain valid).

The specifics here would be different so you couldn't take that exact approach but a lot of the insights and techniques could apply. The way I thikn of it is that he's come up with a radically different approach for community in large, all-public social networks that can in principle complement fedi's scoped-visibility networked smaller communities. Details TBD of course!

@SuperMoosie I know bluesky is centralized. Read the last section of the article

The thing is, bluesky is Centralised.

Yea you cannout you account info somewhere, but you need bluesky to do everything else. Yes other companies can run relays, but the amount of data and storage means it is very costly. A decent big size company would be needed. As more uses are added, those costs grow. which then would have to inject ads to help pay for it all. Then the authentication of your account still needs to be done centrally by bluesky.

It is a great twitter replacement as that is what it was designed to be.

@tillshadeisgone the saddest thing is, the blacksky community will at some point have to leave in search for another place if the reports on VC and crypto bro ownership are remotely true. And the enshittification cycle is a lot shorter these days than the 15y run twatter has had.

On the up side, there's a whole playbook lying ready to facilitate mass migration. In that time we need to work to make this place more hospitable.
