     This is movie LOTR not book LOTR btw (I have no idea what happens in the books). Actually FF8 came out before the LOTR movies so who knows,

     new* theory: at the end of Fellowship of the Ring (AKA Lord of the Rings Disc 1), as Frodo departs on a boat and Sam wades into the river after him, Sam fully drowns in that comically deep river. The rest of the trilogy is all happening in Sam's head moments before he dies.
