Hot take:
Columbus doesn't deserve the hate he gets.
If not him, somebody else would have found the continent. Most of the people hating on him wouldn't even be alive without him. He couldn't know that his travel would have caused the creation of one of the countries most responsible for harming our planet. It was not his intention to harm the locals, reading his journals it's clear that,to him,it was a good thing to share Christianity. I HATE Christianity, but we gotta try to put ourselves in the mindset of the time.
Happy to discuss and to change my opinion, but to me it seems the hate he gets is just shortsighted.

No arguing there, they existed and did something big enough to be relevant. Idolizing or demonizing them is just silly. We can admire some of their traits or find other traits disgusting but each year Columbus gets shat on in ways most historical figures dknt. And it just feels a bit childish.
Definitely not an angel, but bloody hell its like people think he's the source of all evil. -

He started trading, left a bunch of dudes to build a settlement and went back to Spain.
When he came back he found them all dead.
That's when shit went downhill.
The "someone else would have done it" refers to the fact that the land would have been found sooner or later, the fairy tale that "they would still live in peace if it wasn't for him" is bull, because again,if not him someone else would have.
Not to mention, they did not live in peace. There was a lot of war among tribes and they would enslave one another, too.
I'm not saying we should idolize him but of all historical figures he's one of the ones getting shat on the most while not having done more than others. Like damn what should we say about Genghis Kahn then? Bro literally used bio weapons. -
