I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but if you're using Ubuntu please don't install the Steam snap from the App Center. And don't do "apt install steam" in Terminal, either. Because you'll still get the Snap...

What you want is the latest .deb installer straight from Valve. Trust me on this.
    WAY fewer headaches. https://repo.steampowered.com/steam/

(This also makes it significantly easier to use tools like GOverlay/MangoHUD)

@graves501 I enjoyed Ubuntu for several years and it still has its place.

But… that team continues to make a bunch of baffling decisions when it comes to gaming

@killyourfm Yuck, glad that I've never used Ubuntu and just used Linux Mint as my first distro back in the day!

@graves501 I genuinely don't understand Ubuntu's relentless pursuit of Snaps. Just adopt Flatpak like the vast majority of the Linux distro community already has.

@freax Would you believe I've never tried Debian? Seriously! I have tried dozens of distros, but never Debian. I had veered away mainly because (at the time) I wanted bleeding edge, or at least not outdated, kernel and graphics stack.

I feel like I should check it out.

@killyourfm What's your opinion on DebIan btw? :)
I've lately (okay, time flies fast, it's been half a year) tried DebIan 12 with KDE and it actually seemed both comfortable and up to date (which is saying a lot, considering I daily drive Arch :D)

      @killyourfm

Place your bets, which of these will happen first?

      - US adopts the ISO 8601 date format
      - EU removes daylight savings
      - Ubuntu adopts Flatpak
      - The sun exhaust all it's energy

@lucaotta I'm sure you're not clueless! In my experience, I've seen performance issues compared to the standard .deb package, and I've also seen games simply not working (like Fallout 76) when they should be.

But the most compelling reason? When Valve developers recommend against it: https://mastodon.social/@TTimo/111772575146054328

Valve is seeing an increasing number of bug reports for issues caused by Canonical's repackaging of the Steam client through snap. The best way to install Steam on Debian and derivative operating systems is to follow the instructions at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/#getting-started and use the official .deb We are not involved with the snap repackaging. It has a lot of issues. If you don't want the .deb, please at least consider the flatpak version. #steam #ubuntu #snap #flatpak

@killyourfm care to explain to a clueless user? I’m using the snap (I think) right now and I’ve yet to encounter any major issue. Thanks!
